A Review: Sex, Lies & Vampires – Katie MacAlister

PhotobucketSex, Lies & Vampires is the 3rd book in the Dark Ones series by Katie MacAlister.

Amongst the Dark Ones there is one they call The Betrayer, one who is doomed for all eternity. Now it’s Nell Harris’s job to apprehend him. Problem is, he’s seriously attractive and her penchant for bad-boys has suddenly surged into overdrive…

I stayed up to the wee hours of the morning, this morning, finishing off Sex, Lies & Vampires. That’s the sign of a good book.

In Sex, Lies & Vampires we learn about Adrian, who is known as The Betrayer as he is a Dark One that works for a demon lord, and Nell, who is a Charmer that no longer charms. Their affair is is wrought with problems, as they must save Adrian’s son from a demon lord and reverse the curse on Adrian.

I love every single book in this series. Even though there is an overlap of some characters, each book is different in their own way. In Sex, Lies & Vampires Christian and Allie are back, and trying to stop Adrian, but the story really is about Adrian and Nell.

Nell is unlike the other heroines and she embraces Adrian’s vampireism from the first meeting. In fact she is eager to be bitten by him and become his Beloved. I loved Nell, she is feisty and so much fun…

Twin irises of the purest sapphire regarded me with growing confusion.
“This is so cool! Your eyes change color when I touch you. Look!”
I lifted my hand again. Adrian rolled his (summer blue) eyes and turned away. I leaned forward and put my hand on his chest, over his heart. His eyes turned navy.
“Hoo! You’re like a giant mood ring! I wonder if I can make different colors show up depending where I can touch you.”
Adrian followed my speculative gaze to his fly, jumping up to stand in front of me in an aggressive pose, arms crossed over his chest, legs spread. “I am not a mood ring! I am not a toy! I am dangerous and feared by all! You are not to treat me in such a flip, irreverent manner-”
I put my hand on his thigh, close to his groin, but not actually touching naughty parts. His eyes turned a dark midnight blue.
“This is so fun!” I giggled.

I originally thought that these books could be read as stand-alone’s but after reading the first three books, I do recommend reading them in order. Even though they are each about a different Dark One and his Beloved, there are recurring characters.

I definitely can’t wait to read the next one. Needless to say I’m addicted to this series.

The Sunday Salon: Reading through the Canadians

PhotobucketTo learn more about The Sunday Salon click here.

While some places in the US are suffering from a “snowpocalypse” it is life as normal here in Saskatchewan. Snow everyday, reading everyday. I’ve been having a great reading week, going through book after book, as my insomnia keeps me up to all hours.

This week I read:
* A Girl’s Guide to Vampires by Katie MacAlister
* Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery
* Sex and the Single Vampire by Katie MacAlister
* The Mystery of the Blue Train by Agatha Christie

The winner of the best book of the week is… Lucy Maud Montgomery for Anne of Green Gables. I loved this book in a million different ways, many of which I can’t describe. It was so beautiful and I’m hoping I will enjoy the rest of the series just as much.

So as part of my 1010 Reading Challenge I’m endeavouring to try and read more Canadian Fiction. I’ve lived in Canada for over three years and I’ve touched on a few authors that I love, such as Kelley Armstrong, but I don’t feel like I’ve done Canada justice with my reading material. I’ve read a lot of Canadian non-fiction (I’m a big hockey fan, and have made my way through many hockey non-fiction books) but I have barely started through the Canadian fiction.

So here is a list of authors I am going to sample:
* Arthur Slade – The Hunchback Assignments is first on my list,
* Kelley Armstrong -I’ve read Bitten, and want to move through her Otherworld series,
* Lucy Maud Montgomery – I’ve already read Anne of Green Gables, and I’m going to read some of her other books too,
* Tanya Huff – starting with The Summon Keeper, and moving to her other series as well.

I may also try:
* Douglas Coupland
* Margaret Atwood
* Robert Charles Wilson
* Robert J Sawyer

I’m completely open to suggestions. I’m aiming to read a minimum of 10 books from Canadian authors, and will probably try and read from a variety of authors. So readers, do you have any authors to recommend, or particular books by the above authors?
